Eight Words Which Have Completely Changed Their Meaning Over Time

Artificial

This originally meant ‘full of artistic or technical skill’. Now its meaning has a very different slant.

Nice

This comes from the Latin ‘not to know’. Originally a ‘nice person’ was someone who was ignorant or unaware.

Awful

This meant ‘full of awe’ i.e. something wonderful, delightful, amazing. However, over time it has evolved to mean exactly the opposite.

Brave

This once was used to signify cowardice. Indeed, its old meaning lives on in the word ‘bravado’.

Manufacture

From the Latin meaning ‘to make by hand’ this originally signified things that were created by craftsmen. Now the opposite, made by machines, is its meaning.

Counterfeit

This once meant a perfect copy. Now it means anything but.

Prove

Originally this meant to test. The old meaning survives in the phrase ‘proving ground’.

Tell

Its original meaning was ‘to count’. Which is how we came by the term ‘bank teller’.

Prepositional Phrases of Time and Location

I like to practice prepositional phrases with locations and scheduled events. It gives the student a clearer perspective to the application of prepositions so that are not just taught in the classic sense. If the student has a good sense of orienting himself in space using points of reference or can explain where objects are in relation to one another that follows a classical approach that has worked successfully for decades if not longer. Today when seeing that improving memory is often an issue to address in the learning process, then getting the student to see prepositions in another sense is a positive.

So today I think if the student can put himself in a given street location in reference to stores then he has another chance to cover those same prepositions he learned by expressing the position of a pen in reference to a table. The pen is either under, on or over the table as the teacher will demonstrate for beginners but when the student has to see himself on a road in front of an address he has to understand that he becomes "the pen on the table."

Prepositional phrases of time will begin with a preposition and will explain when the activity of the sentence occurs. Sometimes there may be more than one such phrase in sequence. In the example, “ He got a raise at the beginning of the day”, there are two prepositional phrases, initiated with at and for, the first of informs the reader what part of the day the person got a raise.

Prepositional phrases of location can be like, “ He stood on the corner” tells the reader where the person stood. If the person wants to elaborate on the location, he can say, “He stood on the corner in front of the cinema”. Similarly phrases using time and location can be used together to be specific in a different way as in: “ He stood on the corner at half past eight”. This way the learner will learn when to be specific about his use of on, in and at.

The Five Paragraph Essay

When it comes to passing senior year English, there's nothing more dreaded than the five paragraph essay. You're probably scratching your head right now wondering how you're going to come up with a thesis statement. Or, maybe you're one of those people that gets lost in class and wants to know what the heck a thesis statement is in the first place. I know I struggled with it, but it doesn't have to be difficult. In the next four paragraphs, I'll show you how easy it is to write your five paragraph essay; it's as easy as putting together your thesis statement, three supporting paragraphs, and a simple conclusion.

The first thing you need to do is come up with a big statement and three ways you're going to back it up. You may be limited as far as topics go, but the structure of your thesis statement will be the same regardless of the point you're trying to make. The thesis statement is always a combination of your big statement followed by your backup points. For example, your statement might be that Grandma did not get run over by a reindeer. Following that, your three points might be that the supposed witnesses have to be lying because they were somewhere entirely different when the incident occurred, that Grandma never goes outside in the cold, and that Grandma is laid up in the nursing home and couldn't possibly have been walking home on Christmas Eve. Your thesis statement would go something like this: I am going to show you that due to Grandma's incredible witnesses, her personal preferences, and her physical limitations, it is highly improbable and most unlikely that Grandma was really run over by a reindeer.

The next thing you need to do is explain your three supporting backup points. Explain them in the order you listed them. In the example above, I would write a paragraph going into detail how I know the witnesses are fake. Then, I would write my next paragraph going into detail about Grandma's personal preferences; she hates the cold! My third paragraph would discuss how and why she couldn't have gotten out of bed in the first place on her own. These three paragraphs are the body of your five paragraph essay, therefore they should be the most detailed.

After the body of your essay, it's important to sum it up so to speak. Remind the reader of your three points. After examining the witnesses, you can prove that they're lying. Your grandma never goes out in the cold. Your grandma can't even walk! Lastly, you end with a concluding statement. To do this, you basically re-state your thesis statement. What was "I am going to show you that due to Grandma's incredible witnesses, her personal preferences, and her physical limitations, it is highly improbable and most unlikely that Grandma was really run over by a reindeer" becomes something like this: After going into detail about my grandma's incredible witnesses, her personal preferences, and her physical limitations, I hope I have convinced you that my grandma most certainly was not run over by a reindeer.

Well, I certainly hope that everyone now understands how to successfully build their five paragraph essay. Writing a five paragraph essay is not difficult at all. Anyone who can put together a thesis statement, five supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion can master the five paragraph essay!

14 Misused English Words and Phrases

I decided to write this article after listening to a radio show, where the topic of misused words and phrases were addressed. Here are some misused, mispronounced, and misplaced words and phrases that grate my nerves:

Irregardless. This word I feel, belongs at the top of the list. I don't really see it as a word. If it were actually a word, the definition would be; “not regardless.” The word that should be used is; “regardless.” (Regardless of what you thought before reading this). I hear this word abused by some people that have college degrees in English! Here is a typical example of what you will commonly see regarding this word: “We continue to use gas in our cars, irregardless of the fact that the price is skyrocketing.” The correct example would be:“We continue to use gas in our cars, regardless of the fact that the price is skyrocketing.”

“Care less.” We probably have all been guilty about using this phrase improperly, for example: “I could care less about the score of the game last night.” The correct example would be: “I could not care less about the score of the game last night.”

“Intensive purposes.” This one should be: “Intents and purposes.” I have also seen it incorrectly as: “Intense and purposes.” You get the idea though- for all intents and purposes.

Supposibly. This is just plain wrong. The correct version is: Supposedly. For example: “Supposedly you are reading this article out of boredom.”

Got and gots. I grew up in the South, so I have heard quite a bit of language impairment with “got and gots.” Here is an example of the wrong use: “Your boss gots your paycheck for you.” The correct version would be to eliminate “gots” altogether, and you would have: “Your boss has your paycheck for you.” Here's an example of a misuse of the word “got:” “I got a bag groceries for you.” Again, you can eliminate the word “got,” and you get: “I have a bag of groceries for you.” Got it?

“Opposed to” I have seen this one confused with “supposed to,” and I have also seen it spelled as: “Upposed to.” No wonder it's so hard for some people to learn Engrish. (I mean English).

“Philharmonica orchestra.” I have played in many country bands, and on more than one occasion heard my drummer refer to the string sound of my keyboard, as sounding like a “philharmonica orchestra!” For those who don't know, the correct use would be: “Philharmonic orchestra.”

Hotness. I have heard this used instead of the word heat, like so: “You can feel the hotness in the room with the hot heat.” (I am not making this up. If I only had a voice recorder with me all the time.)

Electricianist. I have heard this used by someone to describe my occupation as an “electrician.”

Kleenex, Xerox, Coke, and Clorox. I am including all four of these to illustrate the point, that not all face tissues-or wipes, are Kleenex. Kleenex, Xerox, Coke, and Clorox, are brand names. Not every photocopy is a Xerox, all soda is a Coke, and not all bleach is Clorox.

Hot water heater. Why would you want to heat hot water? How about just plain "water heater?"

Worser. This of course, gets abused along with "worse" and "worst.

Klein's, Channel Lock's, and Vise Grip's. These are all brands of pliers. Lineman's pliers are referred to by electricians as "Klein's." "Channel Lock's" usually refer to adjustable pipe pliers (sometimes called water pump pliers). "Vise Grip's" refer to various locking type pliers. Once again, great examples of advertising genius.

Libary. Yes there are still people who go to the "libary," as opposed to the library.

I'll probably ad more to the list as I think of them, and I am sure there are a lot more. Thanks for reading, and please be nice with the comments. This is for "info- tainment," a combination of information and entertainment.

So What Can You Do with a Creative Writing Degree?

That very question has been the voice between my ears throughout my University and post-University months. I could never really give anyone a straight enough answer; most of the time I'd just shrug and then make a joke about being a starving poet on the streets of Paris (my last stab at romance) with my dog "Clover" (named appropriately.)

In all seriousness, I've never really found a positive answer. I've googled the question countless times (pathetic I know) but I'm still not any wiser. I've heard vague talk from people making the point that "creative writing can"t really be taught' and "a degree won"t really increase a writer's desires to become published.' Fair enough, I thought, but I already knew that. The primary reason I went to University in the first place was to "find myself" and generally just get away from all the commotion going on back home. Maybe I should have thought about the job prospects of a writing degree a little more, but no point dwelling on them now. I had developed a passion for writing and I went with my instincts.

So I've recently graduated, and now I'm thinking "damn, what"s next?!' I emailed the careers centre and came up with this list of possible jobs:

Newspaper journalist

Editorial assistant

Publishing for media, and performing arts

Screen and radio writing

Video game content writer

Freelance writer with extra job to fund

Proof reader

PR officer

Press sub editor

Copywriter

I was also given this piece of advice:

Many English students write for student newspapers and magazines, get involved with student radio or film societies or volunteer in the community or local schools. For you as an English student doing a non-vocational course, the skills you develop outside your study are critical in developing a rounded CV. The combination of evidence of skills gained from work experience and extracurricular activities, as well as through your study, can help you in CV writing and job applications - and boost your employability.

During my studies, I had work experience as a football writer so I thought that would shift my CV up the employer's pile a little. As yet though, I haven't been able to find a job in the Leeds area that relates to Creative Writing.

I'm currently freelancing while working a "proper job" to keep a roof over my head, which seems to be the common thing with most writers and Creative Writing graduates I've spoken to.

So yeah, at this point of time I'm not really in the position to give advice to fellow writers on the subject of employment; I'm just looking to get a discussion going. I'm still learning, like many others, and would appreciate any words of encouragement.

Oh, and a final word: I don't regret my choice of degree by any means, and I still have a strong passion for writing despite the risky nature that comes with wanting to be a writer. As an Individual, I feel my experience through University has developed my technique and belief in my abilities, particularly seen as though all students were encouraged to share their work with a variety of audience.

On a personal level, this was definitely not a bad thing.

10 Ways to Quickly Build an Impressive Vocabulary

Reading

When it comes to building vocabulary, nothing beats reading. Reading allows you to not only to come in contact with new words, but also to gain new knowledge. Reading almost anything will help, but for advanced vocabulary builders, I recommend at least high school level novels and articles.

Writing

I cannot stress enough the importance of writing. Writing allows you to be able to use your new vocabulary in a way that you need not improvise. In other words, if you are not very comfortable with a new vocabulary word, you can take awhile to think about how to use it in your written context.

Study vocabulary roots

Many words, especially big words, contain word roots that can help you decipher their meaning. For example, the word circumlocution contains two roots: circum which means around, and loqu which means talk. From these roots, we can figure out that circumlocution means to talk around, or evasive speech. Having a firm knowledge of the different word roots will help you greatly in building your vocabulary.

Surround yourself with good language

Talk to smart adults who have a wide range of knowledge. These people usually use high level vocabulary and you can pick up many words from them.

Use new vocabulary in daily conversation

This allows you to use new vocabulary in a improvising manner, which allows you to become more familiar with them. Try to use several vocabulary words in conversation everyday.

Keep a vocabulary notebook

Whenever you're reading, keep a notebook handy so you can jot down words that you do not know the meaning of, so you can look them up later.

Make flashcards and look through them everyday

Put the words that you have the most trouble with on flashcards and look through them everyday. This is an old memorizing tactic but it works.

Watch documentaries and news on television

Instead of mindless game shows and soap operas, watch informational television such as documentaries and news broadcasts because these programs usually employ sophisticated language.

Listen to National Public Radio

National Public Radio is a great station that offers news and cultural programming, and also uses sophisticated language. You can also listen to other such stations.

Set your homepage to BBC, MSN, or other news sites

Set your homepage to one of these news sites so you can read a news article everyday. These news articles usually contain high level vocabulary.

English Importance

From the beginning of the year to the end my writing skills have made some progress over the course of time. Attached is a paper from the very beginning of the year that apparently I did not date but was somewhere in the first week or so if i remember correctly. And the second paper is from our Giver section at the very end when we were tested the date of which is also unknown. Two things that have improved this year are conventions and sentence fluency.

For example my sentences at the beginning of this year were choppy and thrown around. "I have a very special item in my life. It is a small crystal handed down to me from my sister." but as the year progressed my sentences began to vary and lengthen, "I think Louis Lowry is communicating that freedom of choice is a privilege. We should all have it, even though we can make wrong ones it is worth it in the long run."

Another example from the first and second paper on fluency are shown in these sentences. "This magic is one of great powers. All you have to do is look deep inside it and push everything else away." As compared to, "Choices can endanger or save you, but without them we are lost and there is no real society, just vague, lost, and robot like. Without choices we are inhumane."

My conventions have made progress even though I could care less about them as the learning was forced upon me by a language arts teacher that actually taught me writing skills for the first time in a few years even though I could care less to learn it. It was forced into my brain where it shall stay. For example I now the comma in a sentence using "but" or "because" comes before the word and not after it. And my grammar has improved slightly. "It has an magic....." I now would never write. I think I knew this at the beginning of the year but am only now catching it. I now catch more mistakes in my writing. This may also be from talking to my smart aleck friend Derek

who will alway give me "crud" about a typo or spelling error. Which isn't apart of school, but shows my growth as a writer over this year.

My conventions and fluency still need continued work even though they have approved. For example even in the newer paper i can pot a few: the sentence, "Choices can endanger or save you, but without them we are lost and there is no real society, just vague, lost, and robot like. Without choices we are inhumane." after society should be a ";" not a comma. And "...just vague lost and robot like..." is not well functioned in grammar and doesn't quite flow; it would be better as "....; we are just vague, lost, and robot like." These are important me because I wan a career as an author and having better skills will save me money on critiques.

I indeed have writing goals for next year the first I say every year and truly do think I can accomplish it next year even knowing more about the field which shows that i advanced my knowledge in it this year as well. This proves I have the motivation since I indeed did get somewhere. Next year I hope to get closer to or perhaps even publishing my first novel and getting it on the market. Working hard on my conventions and fluency will help me to get there. My second goal is to be a better author and not make so many mistakes in my writing the first time around in areas such as conventions and fluency, therefore there will be more work done and less to get done. Ha-ha then I can get essays such as theese done in four minutes of my time and not five and still maintain my A average. Ha-ha.

Writing research papers is a normal part of academic life. Anyone who has been a student has surely experienced making essays or term papers at one point or another. In order to get the maximum benefit from submitting a written assignment for academic purposes, one must understand how to effectively create a good research paper. The act of recording facts, statistics, and observations is part of research, but it is not all there is to writing and completing a polished work. The writer must first keep in mind that the research paper is a reflection of his or her own unique thoughts, not just a repetition of ideas stated by another source.

Roth stated that “the ideas of others, repeated uncritically, do not make a research paper”. Therefore, the author must think and write independently, but also credit the various sources that helped him or her put useful individual ideas into writing. This degree of responsibility and accountability must be developed by any student or author who wishes to create interesting and scholarly research papers.

A good research paper is just the tip of the iceberg. Before writing the actual paper, the author should spend a great deal of time gathering facts, ideas, examples, sources and other related information. If a topic is not provided, the author must also think about a mind provoking theme to talk about, and then narrow it to a specific field of interest. Many authors make the mistake of choosing a topic that is too broad. The result is that they get paralyzed with a flood of sources and ideas, or they simply can’t write anything at all. On the contrary, if the topic of your research paper has been narrowed down to an easily definable topic and a few key points, you are in a terrific position to use that as a starting point or springboard for your supporting ideas.

Forlini stated that “when you have gathered all your supporting material, you are ready to decide on the best method of organization”. Doing the research and gathering of ideas is just half the battle. For a research paper to be considered well written, its ideas must be arranged in a logical order and smooth transition. The real challenge to the writer comes at the actual writing stage. The ideas must be written in such a way that they achieve the writer’s purpose, whether it is to entertain, inform, or persuade the readers. To be able to achieve this, it would be helpful for the writer to develop an outline for the research paper. The purpose of the outline is to list the opening sentence, thesis statement, key points, and supporting sentences of the research paper in an orderly manner. This will ensure that the writer will not digress from the particular topic and will succeed in capturing the attention and winning the acclaim of the readers.

Money has become an important method for people to exchange either tangible or intangible things with metal-made or paper-made materials which are recognized as "Money" in the modern life. Without money, it will be hard for people to fulfil needs other than their basic needs. Under the pressure of high cost living, petrol rise, bigger family expenditure, and increasing needs, money is always found to be inadequate to fulfil the full needs of humans. Therefore, people have attempted to look for other ways which might increase their money either through writing articles, sharing photos, videos and pictures, blogging, selling products at eBay or auction to generate some revenue which might have assisted them to cover electrical, water, petrol or gas bills.

All listed sites here are legal companies that will pay you for your hard work. The sites are carefully reviewed to ensure its reliability and reputation and thus these sites are free of scam.

Here, you earn 50% and Triond earns 50% of the revenue generated from your article. Generally, the more contents you wrote the more shares of revenue that your articles can bring in with you. This is the best sites that I highly recommend to the international users. Besides English, they also publish articles written from Abkhazian to Zulu, which can be a great help for international writers who have not much knowledge of English.
