Writing You Own Memoirs

Your life is not dull and boring! It may seem dull to you, but other people think the same thing about themselves. It's a little like the concept of "one man's trash is another man's treasure." We each lead different lives, and what we live can be very interesting to someone else. So get out your pen and paper or your computer and have a go at writing about your life! There are some things you’ll need: A Computer with word-processing program or/and a pad of paper and penand most importantly your memories.

First things first - In a notebook, write down the particulars about yourself. When you were born, where, how much you weighed at birth, what time it was when you came into the world, what your parents names are/were. Who attended your birth, who were your doctors, what was said as you were born, and other aspects of your birth.

Then add to your pages from your first memories. Maybe it was something that happened to you your first day at school, maybe it was something your parents taught you. Your first animals, your first toy, etc. Write it down.

Add to that. Describe your family the way you see them. List your siblings, your cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. Think about your genealogy, are there any famous or infamous relatives in your lifetime? Be sure to mention them. Tell the story as you know it, it doesn’t have to be perfect, there are your thoughts, not a non-fictional book.

When you start, begin by thinking about things that mean something to you. Think about the schools you attended and the friends you made. What bad things have happened to you? What good things? What role does religion play in your life? What about politics? What unusual places have you been? What animals have you owned? Do you have any funny or sad stories about animals? You can fill a notebook in no time at all.

The next step is to organize all your information. Are you planning to write a book to be published from your memoirs. You will need to separate the information you have gathered and written into chapters. Try to start each chapter at a distinct place. And it should end the same way. Tell the story from your point of view, since it's your story.

You can make your story as long or short as you like it to be. Have fun with it! Happy writing!

Wordpress Vs. Mambo

I have build two websites with CMS package. One is Mambo, the other is Wordpress. They all are good systems but with different features.

1: Wordpress can only be used on blog website. Mambo can be used on some other website.

2: It is very easy to install Wordpress. It only took me 5 minutes to install on the server without any problems. But Mambo took me 30 minutes or longer.

3: Wordpress has Chinese package and support Chinese very well. It is a little bit painful to use Mambor to build Chinese website, but works!

4: It is quit easy to change template in Wordpress system. You only need to unzip the template files and move them into the specified directory. Changing template in Mambo is a little bit complicated and difficult, you have to upload files from the backend and you will encounter problems most time.

Conclusion, if you only want to build a personal blog, I strongly recommend using Wordpress.

Highlight a Triond Writer: Karen Gross

One of my first Triond friends was Karen Gross and I was excited to give her work a try.

The first article that I read of Karen's was "Thanksgiving without Mom." As we finish up the holidays, it is a warm article that will help those who might be missing a family member this holiday season.

Karen is not only a thoughtful writer, I have found her comments on my own articles to be sincere and encouraging. From Karen's profile we know that she has worked previously as a teacher and a librarian, two professions that the public has benefitted from greatly. What a better way to spend your life than to pass on the previous generation's knowledge to the little ones, in teaching, and to harness that knowledge in a systematic fashion to be dispensed easily, as in a librarian. Add to her resume mother and wife and I'd say her life has been full of meaning. And I've never met the lady!

Every American, at least, should read Karen's expose on Canada: "Like, Totally Canadian, Eh?" Our frozen friends to the north deserve more respect, so let's give it up for Karen! [Note to readers: Don't tell Karen, but honestly, isn't saying 'thank you' to the ATM a bit overboard?]

But the thing that I appreciate most about Karen is that she shares her life story with the rest of us, the Triond community (and potentially with a few million others). What possesses a person to share challenges with strangers?

Vulnerability - strength - a desire to make a difference in the world - being genuine. From my perspective, those traits sum up Karen Gross. And let's not forget that this is a woman of faith trusting in her God with all her heart, waiting for that Great Day when he will deliver her body from this wretched Parkinson's. More than that, her soul will finally find its greatest satisfaction, seeing her Savior face to face.

I chose to go back to one of Karen's earlier works, like we've been encouraged to do lately (read it forward). I was caught by the title "I'm Not Fine, Thank You." This work exposes the shallow nature with which North Americans greet each other. Karen's writing is funny and so true to life. I was shocked that not one comment was left on this article, written back in February. I was so shocked, that I left two comments for Karen!

In the midst of Karen's life, she has taken the time to celebrate her 50th Triond Article Anniversary. How exciting! She does so with her recent work "My Fiftieth Triond Article." This article is a crossroads of sorts for Karen. Won't you write Karen today, or read one of her past articles, and celebrate her life!

Writers and World Records

People seem willing to do most anything to have their names go down in history. Some go it alone and some go for it as a group. We all know about the sword swallower's, people pulling buses and trains, longest hair of every imaginable kind, longest toe or finger nails, but what about writers? Yes, there are records to make and break for writer's too! As mentioned already, some go it alone and others invite people to join in the pursuit. Some for fun and others serious.

When I was doing research on this article I wanted to find the world's longest poem. I discovered the record for the longest poem changes rapidly. Do an online search on the topic and you will see many results with dates close to each other. Are they false claims? I have no reason to believe so. It seems many are in hot pursuit of the record regularly.

As I stated before, some records are set by a group, rather than individuals. Did you ever think of writing as a tag team event. It is now! (chuckle) During my search I found a site I want to share with you. This site is inviting others to join them in creating the longest poem in the world. The idea: Everyone adds a few lines to the poem to make the new record. I thought some might find it amusing to play a game of tag or just check it out for fun. (smile) I think we could do it better at Triond anyway. Here is the site:

http://forum.esnips.com/posts/list/2863.page

It's worthy to note that world records don't necessarily include quality, particularly when it comes to records of the arts. After all, who would do the judging and what would be the standard for such a subjective field.

Their are rules for effective writing, but even the dogmatic teacher's of writing can't agree on the appropriate use of the apostrophe, colon or semi-colon. Most qualitative measures to assess the "best", only work in small communities of like-minded thinkers. Each community seems destined to have its own "best of the best" category, lacking a universally agreed upon standard: even for the dogmatic. I am by no means perfect in my grammatical structure or usage, but I continue to study to attain a level of acceptability. It is a worthwhile pursuit.

The dogmatic teacher gives writers a framework of reason; or a structure to work within, but the vast majority of their students will eventually break away to exercise what some in the arts call: "The artists right of creative expression." As one teacher of the arts said to me: "I teach you the mechanics that get you started, and you take it, apply it to your work, internalize it, make it your own, and nobody has the right to call it wrong." Some write with a high degree of passion to get the most pieces published, even if quality suffers a bit. Others are determined to have quality pieces regardless of the number published; while many desire to strike a balance between both. My personal goal is to communicate powerfully what is in my heart, put it in written form as understandably as my current knowledge permits; and love it too much, to allow it to remain the same.

I didn't really set out to go there, but I did. (smile) Yes, sometimes we get carried away in our free reign of artistic expression. Ironically that brings me to the first "world record of writer's" I would like to share with you. He seems to break all the rules and surely causes the dogmatic to cringe. Here it is.

Breaking all the rules for determining appropriate titles, except one: Creativity.

Longest Title of a Book: 1,433 Characters or 290 words in length. Who was it written by? Davide Ciliberti. It is a book written about the peculiar ways of the Public Relations world. ( By the way, record holders are not always famous either.)

If 290 words isn't enough to boggle the mind; try reading it in Italian. In English or Italian: It would qualify for a short essay. I would dare say, most of you reading this article have no idea who this guy is. His long winded title, though a world record, doesn't seem to have made him famous around the "world". Is long winded famous anywhere? I will have to read the book to determine if it was intended to be a work of humor. I would think so: After all, he is writing about the peculiar ways of the PR world, and it's a world known for developing catchy, high impact material that will capture its audience in the shortest time possible. Speaking of capturing an audience in the shortest time possible:

Do you remember the question coming up during President-elect Obama's campaign: "Is the public tired of hearing about him? Is their too much media attention on Obama, and is that going to hurt him?" Well, the answer to that; whether you are for or against him seems to be no. Obama, a virtual unknown seemed to capture the attention of a huge audience in a small snapshot of time. All we heard was Obama's name to the point we had to ask: "Is anyone else in the race?" Perhaps that is a question asked of a national paper in India. Why?

The Most Letters Ever Published in a year in the same national paper: The AJ Independent Hindi Daily newspaper published 214 letters by author Shailendra Singh Yadav of India between January 2nd and December 30th of 2007. See the Obama connection? (smile)

You would if you were trying to get a letter published in that national newspaper. Is anyone else in the race? I would guess the author must have presented quality work, not just quantity or the readership would have demanded something different through the course of that year. Perhaps it's not an issue of over-saturation, but quality saturation. A woman once told a preacher: "There's no such thing as preaching too long, if you're not in the brush, talking in circles."

What is it aspiring authors want to accomplish? Sell our work to the world and beyond: Right? It is said; if you want to know what it takes to be the best, you should study the best. So, let's look at the best. Guess who is the best (in terms of sales) for the most copyrighted books ever sold? None other than my source for the information contained in this article: Guinness World Records.

They sold their 100 millionth copy of Guinness World Records in November 2003. This is a record for copyrighted material, which is a category separate from the non-copyright material of the Bible. Since first being published in 1955, Guinness has taken the global trail and published its work in 37 different languages. Talk about reaching your maximum audience. Wow!

These are "known" record holders. I believe for every "known" record; there is another that was not known or recorded. We have many potential "best of the best" all around us at Triond. I am convinced of one thing: Everyone needs friends to inspire, motivate, challenge and promote them in reciprocal fashion. We even need the story of legends who have come before us: Those who have already forged an awe-inspiring path for others to follow. A path of hard work, discipline, long hours and intense passion.

"As Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend." Proverbs 27:17

Who is it that sharpens you? How have they helped you? They need to hear from you too.

Who has written the most articles, longest poem, longest article, is the most visited, or most commented on at Triond? I don't know: Do you? But you do know who is your record holder in categories: Such as, greatest compassion, most inspirational, most informing (helpful), or most romantic author. Share your thoughts with us.

Some authors I have found who fit many of these categories for me is as follows: acecampillo, Adam Henry Sears, Allison Jae, Athlyn Green, BC Doan, Eunice Tan, Gayle Hamilton, Jasin, Liane Schmidt, lindalulu, Marli Diz, nobert soloria bermosa, and nutuba.

I am sure this will not be the end of great influences I will discover, but in my short time on Triond they have each made their own contributions as a blessing to me. I have listed them alphabetically: Not by any degree of preference. Each one of them is tops in their own special way; some sharing similarities with each other; while in points, still unique. Most importantly, they are all inspirational, encouraging, unselfish, and contributor's to your success. None of them are TOO big to take an interest in you. Look them up in a search by author.

I hope to meet more fine people like them.

Ever wonder how you're writing success is really adding up? Maybe you receive a consistent number of views per month, but how does this really stack up in the "real world" of writing?

When you change how you think, it changes your world.

Have you ever wanted to publish a book? Is that one of your greatest dreams? Have you sometimes thought it would never happen?

Then change your thinking; when you do suddenly you will be surprised to discover what you've already accomplished.

And lastly:

(Here's a great tip: Some of my best articles have been those I have written in direct response to another writer's question. When you write and truly care about your audience, your articles will automatically become hot content. So, take inventory of what people are asking most frequently, and you will be on your way to writing a new invaluable article.)

Robert Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay

Robert Frosts' poem is a very short and small poem in which those short sentences describe such a vast amount of information. I think it is stated to remind us that we should make use of useful things for us instead of ignoring it and be sorry for not making use of it. The other meaning might be that the life is not always fair and everything which is good for us, does not last forever even if we wished so, and therefore we should take advantage of it, now that we have it and that we cannot avoid bad things to occur in our life too. I think it is very hard to state such great words within such a few sentences. This is basically what is happening to Ponyboy at this time of the book. Johnny has murdered Bob and Ponyboy now wishes that everything was as it used to be, and realizes now, while they are wanted, that their lives were already great when everything was normal. But at that time he had wished for more and only looked at the negative sites of being a greaser and not the positive. He realizes that what he had was good, and it would be rather greedy to ask for even more. Ponyboy is sad that he did not realize how good a life he had, before he was put into danger and troubles. It often happens that people realize that they had a great life, before they were put into such serious troubles. That is why we should always think of other people, before we take our problems more serious than they really should be treated. This poem also makes one realize the good things in our lives compared to other people who live in far worse conditions. I am really amazed by this poem and though I've heard a couple of poems, this probably belongs to my favourite, although poems normally do not interest me. But this poem "Nothing gold can stay" really amazed me a lot. It challenges you to find the meaning of it, and I think that there are different meanings that are a bit related to each others somehow. A simply amazing poem.

Writing History

It is hard to know when writing started. People always used some form of writing or other. One kind was runes, used by the vikings. They wrote laws and records.

An ancient east culture used a form of clay tokens called cueniform, to show labour hours. Eventually, as the civilization grew and grew, they used over 100 tokens. These were called pictographs, and they were pictures pressed into the clay. Some of the first forms of writing were to record grain shipments, and other products. The main reason, after experimenting with grain, was beer. Tokens were used to record daily beer rations.

Usually, before this, people relied on word of mouth. They passed stories down from generation to generation.

The next form of writing was egyptian. Writing was veery important to the egyptian people, and litacy was a form of power, making them better than the peasents. They copied the cuneiform writing style closely, although they did start using different tools. They used fine feather pens, and wrote on papyrus.

In china, writing was very interesting. In the Shang dynasty, writing records have been preserved on bones and bronze things. Writing on turtle shells has been dated to 1500BCE. People say that some of the writing found wasn’t complicated enough to be called writing. If it is, it outdates the cueniform writing by 2000 years.

The greeks were one of the first to use an alphabet. They borrowed some of the letters from the old Poenician alphabet. Their main claim to fame, though, was the discovery of vowels.

Triond: A Place to Write... and Improve

Many people write on Triond today, about games, movies, life: just about everything that you can think about in your mind. They all share one thing in common: we write for fun, for money, or for fame.

Many sites that you write for are scammers who want to make money for advertising. Triond is an honest site that, who stills profits, pays us for our hard work, actually puts our names on what we write, and gives us a chance of having whatever we published being seen by many different kinds of people.

Writing is hard, especially if you're trying to make money from all of this. It is hard for me too, as my monthly payments are usually only about a dollar, and a little more if I'm lucky. But that is usually not the point in why we are doing all this, since many people may like our articles or just want to change it a little for more improvement, and that is where the thing that impresses me most of all about Triond comes into play: THE COMMENTS.

When writing comments, people can criticize a writer's article/video/picture, so that they can have a say into what should be changed about the article to make it better and attract more views. Many other writing sites don't pay you for your trouble, and you will not get many comments because you have to join them to put a comment at the bottom, being forced to make an account for them to make more money. Triond does not do this; it let's commenters freely write comments while the writers can read them from their "Dashboard" and delete any that seem unworthy of being posted.

As you can see, this website makes me have to make an account just to put a comment:

As you can see, if you try to type in a comment from rsboards.com, you will come up with a page asking you to join their forums... TWICE! (one at the top blue, one in that green box that you can't miss)

Triond, however, let's everyone comment, whether they're a part of it or not. As an example, you can see the bottom of this article and find that you can write a comment without having to sign up or anything...

Second: Not every site that publishes people's work has a "I Like It" button. Many people could benefit greatly from seeing how many people pressed it as opposed to how many people have seen it, and they could get a ratio of how many people liked it or not.

The "I Like It" button can be used in many ways. It could indicate that people like your style of writing, but it could also indicate that the people viewing it like the topic that you're writing about. There are many different ways you can use the "I Like It" button; I just named two.

Finally, as always, you have to cooperate with writers, community, and commenters to achieve your goals. You should take everyone's comments seriously, look at each other's articles and tell them what they could improve and what was good about it, and in conclusion, be creative!

When Writing, Write

This usually happens when a writer thinks, and believes, he or she can develop any idea that crosses his or her mind with a sufficient stock of verbs and adjectives, coupled by a good grammar. But when he or she starts pounding the keyboard away, he or she suddenly hits a snag – how to go on from the last sentence or even the last word or if he or she is lucky to reach the third sentence, he or she is suddenly at a loss on how to end the paragraph.

Basically, writing is putting across – in a sheet of paper or on a digital document – what one has on his mind that he intends to share to others. On a more deliberate purpose, writing is putting together an idea for others to read. Or more specifically, writing to earn money.

In the past, creative writers just write to put their ideas across, regardless of who reads it. They can observe grammar at its highest order or mangle the Queen’s language with the arrogance only a master of words can do away with, especially in poetry.

In today’s writing, the bottom line is information – does a reader learn something from what he or she reads?

Take for example on how-to topics. In writing how-to articles, the basic rule is clarity or putting across precise information. Short sentences, not beyond 18 words, are ideal. Two to three-syllable words are perfect. And opinions are definitely out of place.

In organizing how-to topics, better prepare an outline before sitting down in front of a computer. Like the topic one intends to write, the article should be written step by step. And ideally, sketches or photographs of the step-by-step process would be a big help.

As how-to topics are intended for all types of readers, no matter their educational attainment or literacy levels, it should be as simple as possible.

In other topics, like essays and impressions, a writer should have extensive knowledge of the topic he or she intends to write about. While the Internet is a good provider of instant information, it is stock knowledge that enriches a good essay and makes profound a readable impression.

Stock knowledge is gained from reading and experience. What one gains from reading, he or she compares, and affirms, with his interactions with other people. One doesn’t simply take as gospel truth what one has read. Rather, it would be good to find affirmation in life’s dealings or even in simple neighborly discussion. Also, you don’t get a good working stock knowledge overnight.

So when you have a topic to write about and you have what it takes to write, start writing. But when you write, go on writing and finish what you have to write about before you edit your work.

Editing a work in progress will not help you any in finishing a good work. It will just stall the smooth flow of ideas. Take care of the redundancies, dangling modifiers later. Just write and finish putting across your ideas first before attempting to edit.

The rule is: Write your ideas first and do the refinements (editing) later.
