How to Pick a Great Topic for Your Online Writing: From Toast Art to Charles Manson

One of the things I've learned about writing in these last few months is that it is really hard to predict what people are going to like. Sometimes you pour your heart and soul into an article that you've heavily researched for days only to have it completely bomb. Other times, you see a funny picture on Flickr and expand it into a weird article on Toast Art and it goes to the number one spot on Hot Content! That article has received over 4,800 views in 2 days! I must admit that I don't quite understand why even though I think it's awesome that people like it so much.

Here's a list of topics that I think tend to get people more interested in your content. I hope it helps!

1. Holidays: People really like to read articles pertaining to whichever holiday is near. Halloween is a great example of this. I wrote several articles on costumes, including kids costumes, grown-up costumes, and cat and dog costumes. Each of these articles received over 1,000 views. Another great thing about writing about holiday topics is that each year when the holiday comes around, you are sure to receive revived interest in your article. This is a great way to keep your articles earning you money and drawing more traffic over time.

2. Art: I've found that there is a huge interest in different and unusual art. I've written a whole series of articles on Artistic Recycling which has received tons of views and interest from readers. One of the articles has even received over 14,000 views! I really think that the key here is to make sure that the art is unique in some way. People are interested most in things they've never seen before.

3. Green: As mentioned under the previous topic, my Artistic Recycling series has been one of my most popular topics. It combines two very interesting topics -- that of Art and being Green. People are increasingly looking for ways to reduce their impact on the world around them. Green is the new black, so they say. I would definitely recommend writing about all things environmentally friendly.

4. Crime: People are intrigued by what makes criminals different than them. I've found interest to be especially high in articles about serial killers. These articles really require a lot of research though so if you've got no real interest in the topic itself, I wouldn't recommend it. I've written many successful articles on notorious serial killers such as Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer. These articles have all received views into the hundreds and sometimes thousands.

5. Current Events: In the short term, you can receive a lot of interest and views about current events. However, in the long term they may be poor performing. We might all be interested in what Cindy McCain was wearing a couple of months ago but now, who cares? Still, if you're an avid follower of news like I am, writing about current events can be a way to share your interests and views. There are a huge amount of writers writing about current events so you'll need to be sure to publish your best possible work in this area.

6. Humor: Many people who are reading articles online are not looking for anything really besides a giggle. Humorous articles can be a way to draw traffic but the key is making sure that they are actually funny. I've read some articles where you can't even tell if the author is joking or not. It makes you wonder a little if they're crazy or kidding. To write funny articles you have to be funny yourself. If you're not, don't bother with this one.

7. Random: I've found that it is best to keep your readers guessing as to what exactly you're going to write about next. It keeps them interested. Is your next article going to be about Barrack Obama or fashion or a recipe or Christmas decorations? Once you've gained a "following" of readers who enjoy your work, it's best not to let them become bored and able to predict everything you're going to write. Keep 'em guessing!

8. What you love: Finally, the best topic to write about is that which you love, topics that interest you. These articles are sure to receive more of your own attention. This will hopefully, lead the article to be better written and will lead to more views.

Good luck writing everyone. There are so many topics and so little time. I love seeing what everyone will come up with!

How to Remain Inspired

My response follows:

I understand your concerns. While this is not always the case for those magical articles that end up with consistent and growing views, sometimes when you have a really great article, it can become popular very quickly and then fade into the background again just as suddenly. This can be explained by a wide number of reasons, such as its initial high visibility (i.e., in the "Hot Content" list, on the top article page on Quazen, or AuthSpot, etc.) and or subject matter trend, thus, branding it inherently short lived. So, understandably, as this particular type of article's "new-ness" wears off, so too do its views.

But there is a remedy to this seemingly unsolvable problem.

As I have stated in past articles, linking past articles to new articles is a sure cure to this predicament. It is an extraordinarily effective way to keep all your work in "fresh circulation" and readily accessible to your readers. In addition, the more links an article has, the higher Google ranks your work in its search engine results (I read this somewhere and it makes logical sense).

Expecting higher earnings per page views?

With regard to earnings, I have read somewhere that this varies based on the ads on your article, the website it is published to, etc. Again, this makes logical sense. And from observation, I have noticed that my articles published on Healthmad.com tend to earn more money per view than those that are published on AuthSpot.com.

Stated in the following article:

Rome Was Not Built Overnight

It is, thus, important to keep in mind that Triond is by no means an overnight oasis, (although it could be if you end up with some incredible titles and or produce many articles at once). Instead, if you see it for what it most realistically is, a means to achieve residual income for life and that by producing enough quality material, the numbers alone (i.e. number of articles published, with links, etc) will produce the results you aspire to reach, you will be able to remain focused with a clear understanding of your progress that supports your dreams and keeps your spirits high.

The following article reminds you to always remember to:

Dream Big, Dream Wide, It's Never Too Late

I once spoke to a billionaire who began his journey to success with only a $1,000 investment. Twenty years later, through steadfast resolve, his vision was materialized in wealth beyond his dreams. If he can do it, so can you! Despite what anyone says, especially yourself (in those moments of self-questioning), you can achieve any level of success you dream of, just believe with everything in your heart that you have no limitations in life and then, take the time to truly understand the reality of the field you have targeted. With these elements in mind, your growing success is unstoppable!

Need Help with Triond: The Reference Guide for New Users

The Definition of Triond

Triond is a website for writers, artists, and musicians to get their work out there. If you’re expecting quick cash, this isn’t the site for you. You have to have a passion for writing, drawing, or music. You also have to have patience; it takes awhile for people to notice your work, but if you love doing what you do, other people will too. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your time.

How the Triond Works: A step by step breakdown of the website

Dashboard:

This is the first page to come up. Dashboard, is basically an overview of everything that is going on. In the upper left hand corner, you will find your content overview. This is any literature, art, pictures, or music you have created and submitted to the website. Next to the content are your content views for that day, your earnings for that day, your comments for that day, and how many people clicked the I Like It! button for that day. In the upper right hand corner, there is your earnings overview. This will tell you what you have earned for this month so far, how much your next payment will be, and when the next payment is coming out. Just below that is Triond’s News. These are your newsletters from Triond. Also on the page, you have friend’s news (your Triond friends’ latest publications), latest messages (messages from people on Triond), hot content (the top few articles people are viewing all over the Triond website and internet), hot tags (popular tags that people use to describe their work), and hot users (popular people on the Triond website.

Submit:

For submit, you have two tabs, online editor and submit. Online Editor is a place to work on and store your work until you decide to submit it. If your work is already finished and saved onto your computer hard drive, you can upload it and submit it for publication.

Content:

Content lets you view all of your content. In Publishing Content, you can see how many times your work has been viewed on that day, how much money your work has earned, the total views of your work, the total earnings of your work, and comments and likes from people. You can also share, fix, and delete any of your content. In Pending Content, you can view your content that you hve submitted but not published yet. This tab also tells you when you submitted the content. If you have an error on your work, you can fix or delete it with the fix and delete icons. Drafts shows you all of your unpublished content that you have saved. You can work on it or delete it while you're there. The Declined Content Tab shows you your declined content, the day the content was submitted on, the day the content was declined on, and the reason your content was declined. The Comments tab shows you all of the comments people have posted about your content. You can view the day the person commented, the name of the commenter, and the person's comment. While you're there you can delete any unwanted comments.

Earnings:

Shows you your payment history and your payment overview.

Community:

Community is basically about your friends on Triond. You can view their latest articles in News Feed, see what they've sent you in Inbox, see what you've sent them in Outbox, view how many friends you have in Friends, and view how many fans you have in Fans.

Explore:

You can explore the world of Triond in Explore. You can view hot, new content, recently published content, hot users, and hot content under hot tags. Also, you can look up other users and content that may not be so hot.

Account:

Six Hints: How to Make Your Writings Get Into the Hot Content List

After I published the “Six Newbie Tips to Succeed on Triond” which was based on my observation in the Triond community I still can’t help observing Triond further. As I clicked on “Explore” to find the names of those who left comments on my writings, I would always be able to drop by in the "Hot Content" section. This made me look and observe what makes a content “hot”. Here are my observations:

Pictures and Superlatives or Extreme Adjectives

No, pictures alone won’t make your work “hot”. It should be pictures with a title that include adjectives such as “Amazing,” “Stunning,” and “Bizarre”. Superlatives like “the most” or “the top” also makes it hot. A combination of both makes it “hotter.”

Title

Titles are so deceiving. Even if the content is not as interesting or as "hot" as the title suggests it makes everyone want to read your work.

Numbers

List-style as Nelson Doyle calls it give titles (and contents) more focus. It should be more than five. “Five Ways” or “Ten Uses” suggest more content and more worth the reading than four below. Ten is probably the most used.

Nature

Anything about nature will interest the majority as long as hints one through three above are applied.

Computers and the Internet

Computer gadgets and interesting or helpful websites are also "hot". Again, superlatives or extreme adjectives apply as well as the number.

Focus on the Majority

The content and title should interest the majority. A native recipe in a particular country that uses native ingredients will only interest the countrymen. The “Ten Most Beautiful Women around the World” will be more interesting to the majority than “The Most Beautiful or the Sexiest Women in a Particular Country.”

Lastly but more importantly, contents should always be original, unique and fresh just as Triond wants it to be.

Eight Pieces of Really Hot Content

As a writer/content contributor on Triond since around January of 2007, I always check out the “Hot Content” list. I find both humor there, and useful information as well. I also notice that a lot of the titles have a some similarities such as, numbers like: “10 Ways to Do (fill in the blank), or “20 Reasons to (fill in the blank). Another similarity is the use of “How To” in the title. Some people would be surprised at how difficult it can be to come up with ten reasons for something, or ten ways to do something.

I have decided to take a humorous look at some “hot content.” This is of course very DRY humor.

Cayenne pepper sauce. (That's a hot one going in or out!)

Fresh brewed coffee from Mc Donald's. (Remember the old lady who sued them over this?)

A can of soup in a microwave. (This really happened)

Opening the radiator cap after driving ten miles. (Steam hurts the illiterate )

A car hood in Nevada in July. (Fried eggs anyone?)

A prostitute at a prison rodeo.

A blind queer in a cucumber patch.

Jumper cables at a redneck reunion. (That's an old one, but I like it)

These are a little corny, but I felt like making an attempt at some humor.

How to Make Your Content "Hot"

Every user on
Triond.com
or any other pay-to-publish website has the desire to get his or her article viewed. The more times it is viewed, the more income you generate.

When I log on to Triond.com, I'm always jealous of the “hot content” section. This section is where everybody sees who is doing the best with an article at that point. I click on them to see what their magic is. Nothing special.

Truly, you or me could be up on this “hot content” wall. All it takes is a little luck and your content hits will rise exponentially.

The first thing people do in order to view things like your article is typing in a keyword. If they type in a keyword you've chosen into their search engine, your article could maybe get seen! To exponentially increase your chances of getting your article seen is to use a common keyword or tag. These can usually be found to the right side of Triond's sites if you're having trouble finding them. So, use “love” instead of “infatuation” (just an example).

Once searched for, a keyword will bring up several matching pages. This could sometimes be into the thousands, so it is important that you have a catchy title for your article. For me, I always click on the ones that pique my interest. Instead of “How to Climb,” use, “How to Not Fall” (again, another example). Also, an article that gives away too much in its title will yield less. If a reader is immediately disinterested they will not click on it. But if they are somewhat unclear on what it's exactly about, they will most likely go for it.

The next thing seen is your sentences immediately under your title. These should add to the title and again, pique the reader's interest. I generally go for the basic structure of: If you want to know more about _________, then this __________ is for you. Make the reader want to read it, but don't give away too much.

Once they click on it, the reader will read your content! If they like it, they will read the article through and maybe give it a “Liked It,” or maybe even leave a comment. These would be in your favor since people generally click on an article more if there is lots of activity in it.

If your article brings in enough hits, you too could maybe be up on the “Hot Content” wall.

Happy writing and hopefully money making!
