Elements of a Good Research Paper

Although composing even a rough draft of a formal research paper can prove to be a daunting task, if one merely understands the foundational elements of a good paper, the task becomes much less menacing. As defined by Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, research can be interpreted as the “studious inquiry or examination ; especially : investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws” (“research”). As such, the appropriate composition of a research paper is key and should include a strong topic, a visible thesis or hypothesis-depending on the type of paper being addressed, proper evidence, a relative conclusion, and prominent interest to accurately define and explicate the desired information (Hult).

The first component encountered when beginning to write a research paper is inevitably the topic about which to write. As this factor ultimately characterizes the paper, the subject must be the strongest ingredient. Without a suitable topic, one cannot even begin to research much less write (Hult).

The next step in constructing a high-quality research paper is to establish a thesis or hypothesis and to find proper evidence to support the alleged “claim”. If writing a scientific research paper, one will generally present a hypothesis or an educated guess as to the outcome of the research in the introduction of the paper, while when generating any other paper, such as English or history, one will simply set forth a thesis that explains the topics to be covered in the manuscript (also in the introduction). Once the hypothesis or thesis has been established, one must then format the body of the paper with knowledgeable supporting information. One must simply decide what kind and how much information is needed to accurately defend his or her assumptions and depict them in the desired manner. If a paper does not include apt supporting details or a directly stated argument, then the paper will never be considered “good research” (Hult).

A final step in transposing a quality paper is constructing a relative conclusion. To constitute a “relative conclusion”, one should include relevant information to that presented in the body of the paper without repeating specific data. Also, the conclusion should be applicable to one's self, certain individuals, or society in general. A conclusion should not be a mindless repetition of previously stated text but rather a significant and provocative exhibition of the reason for one's paper (Hult).

One of the most important elements in a research paper, or rather in any paper, is interest to the readers. Interest can be created in any of various means including anecdotes, questions, or definitions. Likewise, simply presenting a little-known topic can create variety in reading. Yet, if one does not create an appealing paper, it is highly unlikely anyone will read, or at least pay attention, passed the introduction (Hult).

As aforementioned, compiling a research paper can be a difficult mission if one is ill-equipped. However, if one merely follows the simple guidelines presented above, he or she will be able to embark upon the journey toward excellent writing. Everyone is capable of writing well if he or she will only realize the desire to do so.

How to Write Publishable Prose and Fiction

To understand the basic criteria of good writing, a holistic approach should be given to the traps that make good writing difficult.

A writer that depends on formula or secret key fails to impress, than one who follows his feelings and emotions. Feeling is the place where every prose starts. It evolves from the human heart. Therefore, a publishable prose contends with bringing a heart-bound feeling to the surface of any reader.

Another pitfall of good prose is fear! Fear of being wrong. A good prose must be bold, as a writer has the right to be wrong. Therefore, any well-written prose must be able to look at ideas in a new way.

FINDING THE RIGHT WORDS TO WRITE

In order to get the right words to write, consider how the major character or the subject of the prose is to be viewed. This is important since everybody experiences and reacts to life individually.

Decide the arrangement of the prose. You may want to employ flashback or recollections to bring the past to the present in a unique way. Another suitable alternative is moving from cause to effect, or vice-versa.

No matter the style employed, the choice of words should be able to make the copy be alive by stirring the sensory perceptions of the reader. The key tools here are nouns and verbs. Preferably, use active verbs. Avoid passive verbs, as the former tends to evoke emotions from the reader that connects with the prose. Achieve this by bringing the past into the present by paraphrasing recollections into actions or skillfully knitting the two tightly together.
The more you are able to use pictorial nouns that flash pictures and images, the more the reader is attracted to capturing these images on their minds where the overall impression of the work is memorized.

Efficient use of pronouns is passport to a successful prose. Substitute them for nouns at strategic points along the prose.

To incite the maximum meanings of words with precision, appropriate adjectives must be employed.

The effects adverbs have on a publishable prose cannot be over-emphasized. They describe with pinpoint accuracy how actions are performed. Examples are angrily, sadly, animatedly etc.

THE SUBJECT OR FOCAL CHARACTER

To be a selling writer, always give the reader a stake in what happens. Put them in a win or lose position emotionally. Achieve this by putting up a character that the reader can feel for or against him.

THE MODEL EMOTIONS SHOULD FOLLOW

A good prose should create a pattern the emotion of a reader is supposed to follow,--create a motivating stimulus that will bring about a change in the state of mind; --this change in state should finally lead to a reaction.

Furthermore, the three components of reaction should be engaged. These are

Feeling

Action

Speech

Finally, the secret of prose satisfaction is the release of tension. The way the tension that built up along the prose is released in the heart of the reader measures the satisfaction of the work.

With these few secrets weapons of a publishable prose, if any writer that knows his onions follows these steps religiously, he should be expecting fatter bank accounts as their prose goes to the market. Guaranteed!

Why you Should Write

The reason I've become super interested in writing articles lately is after I produced an article called "7 reasons why you should talk to strangers". My best article so far.

My article got 16000+ views (tip: StumbleUpon) in 1 month. That seems ace to me. That's just less than $30 now. I know that's not a lot, but what about as time goes on and that article gets more popular and plus the benefits from me writing more articles like this one?

This sounds cheesy but I just love the feeling of tapping my fingers on the keyboard and producing something others can see comment and share their opinion on it.

I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself so hopefully you can relate and see where I'm coming from, writing articles and how to do it effectively. Don't know what to write about? I'll help you with that.

A Bit About Myself

I'm Chris, 19 at the moment and go to college (ICT, 4 years). My high school grades were crap, I was absent a lot, learnt a bit but nothing really important. I've learnt more from reading on the net and observation in the real world. I don't have a job and am looking to get one but for now I'm writing articles. I've written pretty crappy articles and some good articles. My English has improved over time and I think I'm pretty good at writing now.

So What?

My point is that you don't need to be told you're clever or smart by your friends, family, me or the authorities. My guess is that you probably are really smart in a certain area or areas of your life, it could be anything. Self belief and dedication is what you need. Thinking of doing something? Have an idea? You have to do it in the moment or you'll lose that inspiration and motivation to do it. Of course, excuses will crop up but it's how you deal with them and how you get over them. I know this and am no genius - I still make excuses from time to time.

What Should I Write About?

I personally think the best way to write an article is obviously writing about something you have a lot of experience with. You might even be unaware because you do these things with very little thought (subconsciously). Do you play games online? Write about it. Do you love writing? Write about that, kind of like how I'm doing. What kind of value can you offer to people? Writing is offering value in itself. Maybe you ski, sing or are a photographer. It could be a made up story, share your imagination.

What do you enjoy doing? Earn a bit of money on the side by writing about it.

How do I Produce Quality Articles?

Actually know what you're writing about, use good English spelling and grammar. If you're spelling and grammar is poor then you might want to work on that. I've always been a good speller. Quality articles come from writing a lot. Get through a couple of bad articles if you have to. I've read articles that I wrote a couple of years ago which I read again and realise I've improved.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to write a lot either. The more you say the more people have to think, it's easier to get distracted or bored. Saying less makes your message more powerful. This doesn't just apply to writing either, it's very powerful in everyday face to face communication.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't write a lot. If you have a lot of good to say then say it but don't add things that aren't necessary. Also, don't repeat your points unless you're wording them in a different way to hammer home your message.

But I Don't Have the Time

Are you sure about that? Set a useful habit of writing an hour every day. If you can't do that, do it for two hours every week on a Sunday or something. Make time.

Good luck if you choose to write.

If you've read this please "thumbs up" and leave a quick review on StumbleUpon or Digg this. This will help spread value I want to offer.

Praise and criticism is welcome.

What Makes a Good Piece of Writing?

I consider a good piece of writing to be something that is interesting, informative, eye-catching, easy to read and humorous if appropriate.

The piece should be written to the requested specifications, the topic being researched thoroughly by various methods.

Using referenced quotes and bibliography keeps the writer fully focused, enabling her/him to produce good, honest, solid evidence, while not drifting away from the main issues; keeping him/her on track; thereby carrying the written piece forward fluently and successfully.

Motivation of the writer is most important, consequently interest in the said topic and further related topics would be most advantageous.

Personally speaking - Childcare - of all aged children - in different establishments and settings has given me clearer knowledge in practical terms, while enhancing my academic achievements.

The further use of theory and theorists supports my knowledge, understanding and capabilities of my subject material, enabling my writing manner to excel.
