The lawyer's main reason for taking the bet at first was out of greed, but after staying in confinement for 15 years he learned; languages, math, science, and history. He learned more about life while he was in confinement. At first he did it out of greed, but after a while he mainly wanted to prove a point, and he was getting more out of life while in confinement. This really shows that the lawyer is a well rounded person.

Greed was his personality while he was in the out side world. A person with a greedy personality will take a bet that has to do with money. Greedy people will also do stuff to make them fell like they are in power. When the lawyer went into confinement his greedy personality went out the window, because he wanted to prove a point.

The lawyer wanted to prove a point. The lawyer wanted to prove that the death penalty is better than life in prison. If a person gets life in prison they have a lot of time to think of a way out of prison. The death penalty gets rid of the people who are the must dangerous to society. Even though the lawyer was in confinement he was still getting more out of life than he would if he was not in jail.

In stead of being greedy, the lawyer is getting more out of life. Getting more out of life is more important than getting a lot of money. For example the lawyer told the jailer, “To show these six lines to people who know the languages. Let them read them; if they find not one mistake I implore you to fire a shot in the garden. That shot will show me that my efforts have not been thrown away.” While the lawyer is getting more out of life he was taking the bet out of greed.

The lawyer's first instinct was greed, but after being in confinement for a few years greed went out the window. In came proving a point. The lawyer's personality changed because he wanted to prove that the death penalty was better than life in prison. Also while in confinement he was getting more out of life. The lawyer learned six different languages, math, and science skills far better than the banker ever could.
