A discussion well worth having. Personally, I've always been a little daunted by the Elbow/Cameron method of free writing, simply because of a spiteful inner voice that asks 'What if your subconscious doesn't measure up?' The idea of deliberately writing badly gives more licence, in a way. Which can't be a bad thing.

Claps all round from me Barry.
The mention of free writing is something I am still trying to relax into. The ability to let go and make mistakes sounds easy, and yet - as I read this, my inner critic couldn't help but make her presence felt. She huffed and mumbled something rather crude under her breath then stalked off, back to her dwelling in the rear of my mind.
I guess things like this is where the expression - you can be your own worst enemy - comes from.
I enjoy free writing. It has become a habit and if i were to think before i write then nothing would get done. My daily ritual is to write what ever i am thinking at the time while i am waiting for my 4yo to become bored of the slide or swings or whatever else is in the playground. Usually i give up before she does. I find that once i got into the habit it becomes part of your day.

Most of what I write has been feature articles for newspapers, mostly based on factual issues. These require research and structure. The only fictional short story I've had published was done Barry's way. I was required to write a short story for a class, and I had no idea what to write. I just sat down and started with a description of a man walking along the beach. Why? I didn't know. The whole story, and the twist at the end just 'came out.' For those who haven't tried it, give it a go!

I believe the idea of students deliberately writing poorly is wonderful. Especially if your students are given the opportunity to share their bad writing and discuss the flaws they have included. The results of such a lesson are more likely to be remembered than those of a traditional lesson where a teacher is merely writing flawed examples on a black board.

There is some good advice in this article for any 'would-be' writers. But, I found it lengthy. I find reading text on the screen of my computer uncomfortable. So if the same message could be 'short and sweet' it might encourage more readers to read it all. It would work that way for me, and because I have spoken to other people about this 'hazard' I know there are others that agree with me about lengthy documents on the screen to read.

'Free writing' is the only way I write. Anything after that is editing. Although, I'm guessing this process wouldn't work as well with non-fiction writing.
