Writing Prompts and Ideas

Writer's Block? Are you stuck? Here are some ideas to get your noodle cookin'.

Writer's Block is the most annoying aspect of being a writer. So I have compiled a short list of ideas and prompts I like to use when I have writer's block. Some of the objects and phrases can be interchangeable but the initial idea remains the same. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Don't be afraid to run with it or trash it. But usually they get your noggin thinking so here you go:

  1. Write a 20 minute story using the phrase “I woke up with”.
  2. Compile a list of reasons why you think you should write your life story.
  3. Invent a word. Define it. And use it.
  4. Write a character based off of yourself.
  5. Describe the perfect house.
  6. Go to Google, type in “the new building” under image search. Pick a photograph and write a 15 minute story about it.
  7. Write a 50 word story. No more than 50 words. No less than 50 words.
  8. Describe the concept of computers to someone from the 1500's.
  9. Write a poem as long as you'd like. Edit it. Then when you've got it to where you like it, erase all the words and try to write it from memory using different, more descriptive words.
  10. In 250 words exactly write a story from the perspective of a pair of shoes.
  11. Describe sound to a deaf person.
  12. Describe sight to a blind person.
  13. Write a poem using the phrase, “jet black”.
  14. Invent a weapon. What's it for? How does it work? Can you possibly use it?
  15. Find 5 random photos. Write a short caption for each.

Hopefully some of these will get your brain working. Remember: not everything you write using these prompts will turn out good. If you don't like something don't be afraid to trash it. Or you can leave it be and come back to it. If you like something - roll with it. See where it takes you. You never know.
