This article came about because I was really struggling to find something to write about. After thinking of all the ways I could inspire myself I came up with these and decided to write them down so I wouldn't forget next time I had writers block. The fact that you're here, reading this, might mean that you have writer's block at the moment - if so, I hope I've been of some assistance!
- Phone a friend. They might have some interesting news that will inspire you.
- Channel-hop on the TV - if you have cable, there's bound to be something inspirational amongst all the tat.
- Go for a walk and earwig. Listen in on a few conversations and jot down any interesting odd sentences.
- Look at bizarre book titles in the library - what ideas do they flag up for you?
- Listen to music, especially songs - the lyrics may give you some good ideas.
- What's annoying you at the moment? Getting a good old rant down on paper could well turn into your next project.
- Read some biographies of real people on some “reunite” sites. Ideas for characters can grow from that.
- Read through old journals and notebooks and try to see your old ideas through new eyes and in the light of new experience.
- Visit an art gallery and see if any of the pictures tell a story for you.
- Write an article like this and follow your own advice!
