How to Deal with Writing Rejection

Every fiction writer deals with rejection at one time or another. If you are a writer, you must learn how to deal with writing rejection.

The most important thing to do is realize that, no matter how many times you are rejected, writing still completes your life. If you are going to be majority depressed if you suffer writing rejection, you should probably not become a writer.

Take a Breather from Writing

If writing rejection really bothers you, you should perhaps take a break from writing. Find out if you really can't live without it. Writing rejection, however, can turn a break into a permanent case of writer' block. Only take a break if you know that you can go back to writing after a while, or that you will be happy if you never write again.

Override the Writing Rejection

Every fiction writer should have a number one fan. This is the person who tells you how wonderful your writing is no matter what. It might be your spouse, your best friend, or even your mother. If you are bothered by writing rejection, you should simply show your latest work to this person and then bask in the glow of their compliments.

Shrug it Off and Write

Perhaps the healthiest way of dealing with writing rejection is just to shrug it off and keep writing. Use projection if you must. “That person doesn't know good writing when they see it!” This attitude can be very helpful to get your writing again. However, it can have its drawbacks. If you ignore the rejection completely, you may never realize that your writing needs serious help and you will never work hard to improve.
