There are some shortcomings in a fictional writing to be concerned with. Fiction can become detrimental without them. I have learned this from previous writings I have made. In fact, when a writer writes there are so many factors that can either make a literary work either a pleasant journey to the imagination or a natural disaster. Each writer finds his or her own methods to making sure shortcomings are eliminated. If you are having problems writing a story here are some suggestions.
One factor that shortcomings arise in fiction is the inability to put all the parts of your story together. You love writing, the characters are coming alive. They are creating their own entities. The scenes are perfect as they are bound to flow. Yet you trail off. Here's the thing, it's your first draft. Let the story line lead. As you are a fictional writer you will have this exhilaration and thrill to see the work connect. There will be highs, lows, and then a moment of silence where all is in the plate, but your reader still wants more. You create the first scene, which is your first chapter. The first sentence, the first chapter is what will mold your story. But it does not need to be as concrete as a solid wall, let it have chemistry, let it have a fluid flow. Once you have the final product, read your work. It might get tedious, but just be patient.
Second, make sure your work makes sense. Stick to the genre you chose. Stick to the storyline you chose. Describe the scene, the characters, condition, enunciation, circumstances. Make sure it has life.
Thirdly, make sure you do not omit anything. Proofreading is essential. Make sure you start or end with an outline. Follow the outline.
Fourth, placing not much effort on a character is detrimental. Let the character come out of the page, and hold self esteem for his/her personality, attribute, generality, spontaneity, cunningness, evilness, goodness, etc, etc.
Fifth, realism is essential. Unless it's a slapstick storyline, make sure the characters have a mind and your story a line.
