How to Write for Readers

An article on writing for readers.

Many authors write for themselves. And this is okay. Sometimes we need to write for ourselves and what we are interested in. As writers we need to be able to do this. What interests us? What do we want? What do we want to learn? Sometimes what interest us also interests others, and so this is very good.

Sometimes what interests us and what fulfills our needs as writers does not interest readers.

If we find the markets for what interests us and readers, very good.

Let's say you're interested in jazz, in writing about jazz. That's your interest. Then you must find a market where readers also want to hear about jazz. Find that market, write for it, and do your best writing.

Even then you are still writing for readers. You must address yourself to your readers. If you are a jazz enthusiast yourself, you can picture yourself as a reader. But this is not a diary. Even with diary writing, many people say "Dear Diary." It is truly themselves they are writing. Almost every writer needs to think of a listener, even those writers who are talking to themselves. They are still "talking" and they still have an audience.

So who are your readers?

What are they interested in learning about?

What are their needs?

What are their wants?

What are their enthusiasms?

Of course, you don't have to write about things that don't interest you at all. Try to come up with things that interest both you and your readers and then write about these things.

Suppose your readers are interested in celebrities and you're not generally interested in celebrities. Are there any celebrities that you are interest in? Jot down their names? Are their any topics that involve the celebrity world that you are interested in? Jot down these topics.

So that even if you're not interested in celebrities in general, there are certain topics of interest.

This is the same with politics, music, government, current events, science, gardening, money, etc.

Most of us can find some aspect of all of these topics that we're not interested in in general that interest us.

Then how do we address the reader, how do we talk to the reader, and how do we fulfill the readers needs.

Readers come to articles, including internet articles, not to necessarily fulfill the writers needs, but readers scan for their needs.

The keywords they search for are to fulfill their needs, their interests.

Writers can be in accord on the general topics, then they can address both their needs for writing, and the readers needs for reading.

And this certainly can include the controversial topics.
