Punctuation in America

What has happened to America's language and why it isn't a bad thing.

When was the last time you have read or seen a semicolon? I f most of you answered the smiley face on my last txt message then listen up. Sam Roberts has recently brought the situation of under using punctuation to my mind. Being someone who tends to txt message just about ever day I can directly relate to that. If you ever use a comma or a semicolon it is most likely in a smiley face. That's why I believe that punctuation is becoming a thing of the past and in a way it's not really a terrible thing.

Today in the US there are enough cell phones for every person to own one; and what comes along with phones is text messaging. To me I would believe that this is the number one cause for punctuation being thrown out the door. Who honestly has time to type up a perfect text message with all the semicolons and periods? On top of that almost every message is easily read. People like Sam Roberts say that this is a terrible crisis that the heritage of our language is being thrown out the door: but to me I would say it is just being postponed when text messages are being written. Other times when the comma and semicolon are needed for essays and legal documents people will make sure that everything they just wrote is complete and proper. When someone writes a text message it's usually not very important to make sure you have been perfect with your punctuation. Text is a simple quick and easy way to get in contact with friends and family, it's not a legal document. That is why I see no issues with people leaving punctuation out in these sorts of messages.

Punctuation is becoming a thing of the past and it's not the worst thing in the world. What is really happening is that people are beginning to determine the importance of when and where to actually us proper punctuation. It's not like all of a sudden all of the books being written have suddenly lost every period. So next time someone asks you why you aren't using the proper punctuations in you text message ask them,”Does it really matter?”
