Triond and my Change of Heart

My change of heart from money making to waiting for comments on improvements and just writing so that I can share my creative mind with others.

I can't believe it.

Too many people in this world rely on shortcuts and get-rich-quick schemes. I was also looking for a way to make a quick buck here or there. That's why I first came to Triond. Think about it. Write a poem, people see it, and money is given- from my old point of view, earning money would become a snap as soon as I clicked the submit link for the very first time. Too many people think they can take on the world by themselves.

Everyone has or had someone to guide them in their life, whether one person or a thousand people. I didn't realize that writing has the same properties. In order for the cash to flow in, the content must be read. I thought that as soon as my first poem showed up on the web, I would be piled up in cash all around. I now know that my old perspective of this site and writing in general was wrong.

Once I realized after a month (when I finally decided to see why a check hadn't been mailed to me yet), that no one was reading my content, I got upset but became even more stubborn- I wasn't going to give up. I'm glad I didn't give up, or else I wouldn't be writing this right now. But it took for me to realize that unless you started going out and giving to others: reading other people's works, communicating with other fellow writers, and etc, you wouldn't receive anything in return.

I have had a change of heart and even though I don't see a big, fat check coming to see me in the mail, I will still continue to write on Triond because it is a wonderful site.

Thanks to whomever is reading this right now. For even now, I am still writing. And I just wanted to be real. If I'm real with myself, my poems and writings can become even more real than they once were...

I hear you! I experienced the same epiphany with my fiction writing on StoryMash.com. I, like many other writers, was too concerned with the business aspects of online writing. It wasn't until I learned to "let go" that I started seeing success. I gave into the art of collaborative fiction, and love it. Do what you love to do, and it shows.

Not everyone is on Triond to make a quick buck Bree. I write because I enjoy it and feel like I am a pretty good writer. I found Triond not because I wanted to make money but because I wanted to write and expose some of my work. How this made the top spot on the hot content I will never know because it sounds like you are giving consulation views to get a following for yourself. Good luck in making your money because this is not 'real'.

Great. Thanks for sharing your experience and feelings. Very courageous.

Brings to mind a famous saying "If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are rotten, either write things worth reading or do things worth the writing." — Benjamin Franklin

Keep on writing - good content. All the best.

I feel the same way. I am worried to death the a publisher wont take me cerious though. This is what I want more than anything. You did a good job though.
#14 by Wild Redhead, Oct 3, 2008
I will write whether I get paid or not because I have always enjoyed sharing my work with others just to find out what people think of my style...but I will say this. I am at a point in my life where I want to see if I could possibly make a living at this. If Triond is it GREAT if not I will move on. Good luck to you with whatever it really is you are trying to achieve!

Making a little money would be nice, but I must say that I personally just enjoy writing. I used to hate it until about seven years ago. Now I have written one book and write poems and essays mostly around 500 words some shorter and a few up to three times that long. Anyway, I am pleased that I took the time to read this piece and find that I'm not the only one that writes just for the enjoyment of writing.

Bree, glad you are getting the love now! Nice change of heart! Stay focused on becoming a good writer and maybe you'll be blessed with some cash too. Individuals can change the world, but sometimes we have to change ourselves first, put ourselves into a position to be used in a way that benefits others as well.
#19 by Shaunalynn, Oct 3, 2008
Marketing yourself is very important.

I've found that I write for me, not for money, and that the satisfaction of seeing my name in the by-line is all I really need.

It is rather neat that sometimes a opus submitted, -be it an article or an image, might get several hundred 'views' over the course of a few days then, drop to obscurity for a few weeks only to suddenly start getting dozens of new 'hits' the next month!

Several of my cartoon images have done exactly this. They received over 300 views over a few days, dropped to just 2 or 3 view a day for about three weeks then suddenly, in one 48-hour period, received another 300-something views (earning more dimes, btw.)
It would be uber-neat to have several dozen (or heck, -several HUNDRED) such submissions all working hard for you (or me!) but true, I too am a thespian and love to see my work and my byline published. ;-)

Enjoy!

Hi Bree,

Here's some pointers on increasing your reader views and earnings.

1) Try the bookmarking buttons: submit others stuff and your own, as well.

2) Also, link to your Triond articles at every opportunity. When you write other blog posts or articles, hyperlink with anchor text to your Triond articles.

3) Include your Triond Feed at your blogs and in other pages that allow this.

4) Include a link to your Triond profile page.

5) Link to your Triond profile page in outgoing e-mails, in your e-mail signature.

These strategies should boost your views and earnings.

Great advice. I too was getting disheartened, but I shall try a bit harder from now on. Thanks

Hi, Bree - thanks for sharing your experiences. RJ - your response seems a bit cold. Here she is *admitting* that she may have joined for the wrong reasons. That takes a bit of courage, I'd say.

Keep in there friend. If you want to check out my one poem I got feel free to do so. It's the only one I got so far. It's call What Dark Eye's See. And I plan on puting more poems on my page. Just droping by to read your thoughts. THANKS.
#25 by Mary Contrary, Oct 3, 2008
Perception is in the eye of the beholder. Some of my poems that I thought were my better work get the least attention while the ones I like the least get the most likes and comments! You submit everything because you just never know!!! :)
#26 by Kaulus7, Oct 3, 2008
Thank you. I'll get in touch with people now and I'm glad you posted this.
#27 by Thestickman, Oct 3, 2008
Correct grammar and spelling are a major bonus.
I do intend to check "What Dark Eye's See" but I have to point out that the apostrophe on "Eye's" is probably incorrect use, unless "See" belongs to "Eye" maybe, and as in "Mary's Poem" (the poem belong to Mary, a possessive.)
Okay, -my wife is a Technical Writer/Editor so I am a bit conscious some common grammar errs, spelling, and etc. ;-}

I wanted to add, -earlier I commented about 'old content' that has fallen from favor suddenly attaining a new, second coming..
Well, a short story I wrote over a month ago that received several hundred 'hits' and then fell to 2-3 views per day, has received 56-views in the last hour and still climbing! Somewhere out there, this has been re-discovered! ;-) Who knows? -Maybe just posting HERE has helped ME (although my commenting on others' work is always sincere, else I would say nothing.)

Great post and man to I agree with you. Maybe, one day I will see that fat check until then I will keep trying.

Strange, but I felt the same way about this site, but I too love the comments and new friends I have found here.

Hi Bree, congrats on making it to the top spot in hot content! I have to confess, I'd like to make a living as a writer. Simply because I don't want to take other jobs that have been unfulfilling for me (I'd rather be writing.) My earnings have been small here at times, but I've never thought of giving up. The satisfaction of publishing my work here can't be measured in dollars and cents. I do believe in the phrase "do what you love and the money will follow." Keep on publishing high quality work and always do your best, and one day you will find yourself closer to the dream of making a living as a writer.
Best of luck to you, and keep on writing,
-Allison

It feels like most of us are in the same boat here. We love to write, love to read, and would love to make money at it. Right now, I'm content just to use Triond as a creative outlet. Of course, I'd certainly be happy if it brought in some additional income. Until then, I'll just be happy that I have a place where I can write about anything and everything and have it published in a day. Good luck with your writing. It's exciting to see that you are listed under the hot users with this.

Thank you guys. For all your comments- whether harsh or not. I do deserve some of the harsh one because I did come here for the wrong reasons. But now, I'm just doing this to write. And who knows if I'm going to ge a fat check in the mail today or tomorrow,I really don't anymore. Just being able to hear that some people were able to relate and be helped by this article and my other poem and stories really touch me where earthly monetary can't possibly compete.

crap you got a lot of money... this is top one!! gratz
#38 by Karen Gross, Oct 3, 2008
There certainly are a lot of us in this boat! I too expected more at first, but at least I am not sending manuscripts to publishers and getting rejection letters, nor am I paying anyone to publish my work. I love the feedback of comments and I am at awe at the number of fans who for some reason like my work. Thanks for your encouragement!

I like to write because I can get info out there that maybe no one has read before. Writing at times is an art, and if it becomes a monetary thing, then you begin to lose sight of what it was you were trying to do in the first place. Being paid is a bonus, but it\'s not everything. I\'ve gained more knowledge through Triond and gained so many helpful friends, that I\'d much rather have that than anything else. In a way, this whole experience is like seeing the world through the eyes of a child, and in many ways, it has blessed me with so much wonderful input. You couldn\'t have said it any better. Sometimes you just need to put it in perspective. :)
#40 by Kareen, Oct 3, 2008
I love the way you put this because so many of us expect so much for nothing in return and honestly writing itself is a gift... a gift of self expression a gift of honesty that one can give only him/herself...

I myself have been writing for over 20 years since I was JUST ten years old... it is my passion my outlet and my secret all in one... I let my writings be shown because I write from a pen name that protects me and those who know me from being upset by anything I write... it allows me a freedom to be honest from every perspective...

Keep writing and keep strong... the power is in the pen as they say... but perhaps that should be changed to the key stroke now lol...

Much love,
Kareen

I have a passion for writing and would do so regardless, but to know that someone is actually on the same page is rewarding.

I think I get frustrated about not making more money because that means I still have to keep my main job and would love to spend more time writing. All day long at work I am wishing I could be at home writing, but the pennies that I make here cannot support me, so I continue to write part time and work full time - is that why they say "starving artists"? We are artists, you know, we just create our "pictures" with words.

Take care & God bless. You know it is all in His hands.

Triond is a great place to learn, also. There are always very interesting articles from which something can be learned. Most writers are supportive and friendly, but I have run into very rude writers who seem to not know how to deal with subjects that they disagree with, to which they write very nasty and hateful comments. Triond is not a place to expect great fortunes, but it is a very good place to express yourself and then see how others react to what you write about.

I didn\'t come because I expected to make a lot of money. I just hope to make enough to buy ink and paper for my printer. If can do that I will try to be happy. I just love writing like I expect many others here do as well.

Thank you for your comment, Johnny yuma. I won\'t pretend that this comment among many others surprise me or makes me feel bad about me writing this piece. I wrote this piece as a way to show myself in writing that I changed. I\'m also not sayin that you writing your comment makes me nmad either. I am able to read your comment and hope that I can be as solid in my writing skills as I make the transtion from greedy writer to a writer that loves to just write for the pleasure of others reading it. I really do thank you and others with comments like you a lot. By reading your comments, I keep myself in check. :)
