The WOW Award of the Year 2008

An Award for the most Wonderful Online Writer, publishing with Triond. Who wrote the best piece of 2008, according to his/her fellow authors?

Three Triond writers I stumbled upon recently - and liked immediately very much - set me thinking. Yeah, that  happens when you're reading stuff on Triond; it even happened with me! Now, R J Evans, Lauren Axelrod and Glynis Smy are not only Wonderful Online Writers, they also are a sort of "community workers".

So, they got me thinking: "Maybe," I thought, "it would be a nice idea..." - Most of my stories start that way, and then a whole bunch of voices goes storming in my brain, like I have there a twister eh... twisting and shouting, as if some Beatles were reunited again, with a little help from their friends.

But okay, allright, I was thinking and it went like this: "Maybe it would be a nice idea to organize some sort of a friendly Contest for Triond Writers. Being part of it has to be more important than to win, let's promote the Olympic Ideal here... and our work too, of course. You only can win a Certificate, certifying you are a truly W.O.W.!"

And maybe Your Eternalized Statue:

Get the picture? The Rules of Engagement are simple (I had to make them):

  1. Every Triond Writer can nominate one single Candidate for the Award, with one single article or story or poem, and only by using your Triond Identity and in the Comment Section of this WOW Award of the Year 2008 article. Give us the name of your Candidate and the article of your choice: copy/paste the profile of the author and the link of the article. And don't forget to tell us why you've nominated this article!
  2. You can't submit yourself as a Candidate for the Award.
  3. You can submit Candidates until December, 14.
  4. Only he or she who has submitted a Candidate has the right to bring out one vote for one of the  submitted articles or stories or poems, by commenting only with "Candidate Name + Article Title". The voting starts on December, 15 and ends on December, 29. You may not vote for the article you have submitted. (Yes, I want you to read the work of all the other Candidates!)
  5. Being the Host of the Contest, you can't submit an article written by me, but I do have the right to nominate an article and to vote for an article, a story or a poem.
  6. The Candidate who has written the article, story or poem that has collected the highest number of votes on December, 30... will be the One & Only Winner of the Wonderful Online Writer Award of the Year 2008.
  7. He or she who nominated the WOW will be cartoonized as "Fan of the Year 2008" and get his picture... no, not on the cover of Rolling Stone, but on Picable: see an example here.

Spotted some bugs? Please let me know, I'll fix them!

So here is my Nomination: R.J. Evans (http://www.triond.com/users/R+J+Evans) with "Fox Mulder Leaks the X-file on Michael Phelps - Exclusive" (http://www.purpleslinky.com/Humor/Satire/Fox-Mulder-Releases-the-X-file-on-Michael-Phelps---Exclusive.221999). For the witty way in which he uses the opportunities of the web to tell a marvellous story. Because he is the Webphemera Founding Father. And because he is a guy who introduces himself on his profile page with this words: "I wish I could be a poet in the inspired, welsh, drunken Dylan Thomas way but I fear that it just isn't going to happen!"

Nice idea Patrick :)

I nominate a newcomer: Fairycakebabe (http://www.triond.com/users/Fairycakebabe) with 'A Cautionary Cyber Tale' (http://www.authspot.com/Short-Stories/A-Cautionary-Cyber-Tale.360855). For an excellently written short story that amuses as well as it triggers thought.

I am loving this Patrick. I have to give you props for being a community worker yourself and with that who shall I nominate. I love so many writers so this will be so hard.

Ok, this person has been writing many topics on awareness on healthmad and he never gets the recognition he deserves. Also, I know that throwing in an educational article really catches people of guard when you are so used to seeing top ten lists but, I really think readers need to broaden their horizons and be open to new topics.

This is a wonderful idea! I have so many I want to nominate, but I have decided that this man deserves my vote, he wrote publicly about his love for his wife and designed a cartoon series to depict his love for her and then series 2 for their child. The unique nature of this piece of work is amazing.

#7 by  C Jordan, Nov 26, 2008
This sounds like a good bit of fun, so I'm going to go away and give it plenty of thought and come back with a nomination.

There are so many excellent and witty writers out there, from C Jordan and his Bansky pieces, to Lauren Axelrod's works (especially her piece on Sharks:Cruise Missiles of the Deep). But if I must absolutely choose on piece that has kept me laughing time and again, it would be RJ Evans article on Disney girls drawn bad; http://www.purpleslinky.com/Offbeat/Do-Disney-Girls-Go-Bad-or-Are-They-Drawn-That-Way.218533. Rj just has this witticism about his works that excel everytime. I mean the sheer idea of Snow White becoming pregnant by one of the Seven Dwarfs was just hilarious. Not to mention taking childhood fairy tale princesses and warping them into naughty girls is just too funny. I have to give him props. :)

I have so many favorite Triond writers and artists. However, I nominate maryspaul for her video Ave Maria

http://www.Kleep.com/Arts/Video/Ave-Maria.280221.

This video really touched my heart, in that it displays beauty and grace that is so uplifting, powerful, and deeply moving.

Take Care,

Joanna Maharis

Of all the writers on Triond that I admire, I wondered who to nominate when I just came across this which totally bowled me away for sheer quality and humour: Darlene McFarlane, A Christmas Eve To Remember

Joanna, i have a mixed feeling of being honored as well as of being unworthy for the nomination you made of my video Ave Maria (http://www.Kleep.com/Arts/Video/Ave-Maria.280221.)But i thank you indeed from the heart for this act. i know you are very sincere. i believe it is because of your invitations to see it made to and through your parish priest that made possible the hundreds of views of this humble work. Again, thank you so much!

Take care always and God bless...

Great idea - I am going to have to go away and think long and hard now!

OK.. I would like to nominate Anne Lyken Garner

http://www.triond.com/users/Anne+Lyken+Garner

For her article on Spoken English

http://www.purpleslinky.com/Humor/Spoken-English-Misunderstood.126781

This article made me laugh (and learn) a lot when Anne published it this year!

#16 by  Anne Lyken Garner, Nov 30, 2008
Thanks RJ. That's so kind of you! I wouldn't nominate you back, only because you're already on the board.

Patrick, thanks for this. Let me get back to you with my nomination.

Right! I've got it now. I'd like to nominate BC Doan with this article http://www.newsflavor.com/Alternative/An-Incredible-Man-Who-Inspires-the-World.106733 because it's supremely inspiring.
#18 by  BC Doan, Dec 1, 2008
First, this is a great idea for an article..Very original and unique!

Second, thanks Anne, for the nomination. You're a sweet heart!

Third, I would like to nominate Judy Sheldon with this article: http://www.healthmad.com/Conditions-and-Diseases/Give-Autism-a-Voice.75611 since there is a need for more people to understand this illness!
#19 by  Judy Sheldon, Dec 2, 2008
B C is truly an angel to vote for me. I came upon the idea to write it when I found that viewing the video by “Five for Fighting” would aid in research for autism because the group generously pledged $.49 for each time their video is watched. It tugged at my heart and I saw it as an opportunity to do something more than simply write an article. I've written better articles and have read many better ones such as B C's mentioned in Anne's comment, so I would like to second her vote.

Thank you and God bless you for your inspiring gesture.

Ok, I am tired and have done it wrong!!! I must not vote for my nomination, therefore I vote for...
R J Evans with "Do Disney Girls Go Bad or Are They Drawn That Way?" (http://www.purpleslinky.com/Offbeat/Do-Disney-Girls-Go-Bad-or-Are-They-Drawn-That-Way.218533)

May I add the others are amazing too...congratulations
#23 by  Patrick Bernauw, Jan 2, 2009
There were two "private" votes (through Triond mail), and together with these two public votes, that's four votes... too little to get a convincing Winner of the WOW Award... So, let's stick to the nominations!... And happy publishing!
