Self Publishing Online

A brief guide to self publishing your writing online. What to write and where to publish it.

How do you begin? It is important to do some serious research in the areas in which you are interested in writing about. Not in the content you are going to produce, but in the attractiveness to the wider market. If you are interested in bathing in green Jell-O, it may not be something that many other people are going to be interested in reading about (depending of course on where you hang out on the Internet), so you might want to think again.

Once you have decided that your subject is sound, and there is a market or readership for it, it is worth spending some time developing a style; be it chatty, fact packed, formal or informal. Read what others have written and try to flesh out a style that you like.

Finally, write! One of the most misunderstood aspects of self publishing your work on-line is that it does actually require you to sit and write (and write and write), often at short notice and with eloquence about pretty much anything.

Keep a diary, write reviews on songs, films, television programs. Just keep writing. The author Dick Francis is said to set himself a daily word limit of five thousand words. Some he keeps, and they become his books, and some he scraps. But he always writes. Sounds obvious and it works for many on-line self publishers.

Finally, get your writing out there, by any means necessary. There are any number of blogs, web sites, and message boards which allow you to showcase yourself, so go for it!
