How Do We Know If Our Writing is Good Enough?

You are your own harshest critic.

The worst judge of our work is always ourselves. I don't know why that is, but I do know that this is a fact.

Too many times we make something, thinking it went out badly only to discover that is a great thing; or, on the contrary we thought that it would be a best-seller, only to discover that is only another big failure.

So, how can we know for sure if the writing is good enough to be published?

There are some tips to find out that.

Tips

  1. First of all, if the work has been published it means that has quality. Sites like Triond do not publish material without quality, so the real question is how good it is my writing. Is it better day by day? Am I improving myself?
  2. Second of all, in order to know how well a document (whatever it treats) will do, the best thing to do is our own poll, we can make our own statistics among our friends, asking them to read it and to tell us what they think sincerely, as more persons do the poll, more accurate is the result of it, and; of course, the decision has to be made in base at the majority's opinion.
  3. Try to see it as an observer, as if somebody else have made it; in order to do so, take your time, many times has happened to me that a work that did not like to me at the moment is now the one that likes me the most; or again on the contrary; something that looked a very nice work, now seems to be too poor and with very bad taste. So, watching our works detached of them, in an objective way can help us; not only to realize what changes our work needs, but also how much have we improved in our way to write.
  4. It is very hard to do a poll for some people, because his/her environment lacks of readers, or because these readers don't like the kind of stuff we do.

If you cannot make the poll, whatever the reasons, just publish anything you write and let your readers decide which one of your works is a great job and which one is only good. I repeat, don't worry about publishing bad things, if a work is bad it will not be published at all.

So, that is all I have to say about the subject, I hope it has the utility that you deserve to receive, my unconditional and sidereal hugs for all my readers.

Very nice article and well said. No article, poem or story is bad from the creators side for it is written with their thoughts in mind. It is however judged by the readers opinion and their likes and dislikes. With that said all writters have a gift to write and be it good or bad tips like this are helpful especially when we share. The opinion of others help us to write better, expand the train of thought or simply start over because it truly was bad penmenship. We as writters also learn from the reader no matter who that may be friend or stranger.

Tks much for the tips Bertie

Excellent my good friend tonisan60. I'm very glad that you are writing in English. It is not only a good practice for you, but a good read for all. This way you can reach a lot of people. With the three languages that you speak you can do much good, letting everybody know what you have in mind. There is always someone who is interested in our writing. Thank you again. Saludos.

Very good advice, tonisan60.
One thing that I find very helpful is "read please" You can copy and paste your article to read please and it will read your work back to you. I find that when I hear my work being read aloud, it is easier to spot problems.

http://www.readplease.com/ ReadPlease2003 is a free download.

That download is amazing my dear Darlene, and it comes very in hands because my English speaking is really bad, so bad that my sons tell me to shut up when I speak English in frnt of them, because they say that I am destroying the language, hehe.
And I was his first English teacher, now they speak English a lot better than me, thank God.
I reccomend the downlad that put Darlene in her comment to anyone, there are also Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese modules for this excelent download.
Thank you Darlene for the tip and for the comment, and thank you too, my friend Hugo for your beautiful comment, ey, Hugo, download readplease to your computer, it is really amazing, you will enjoy it.
God bless you both, thanks...

#28 by Allison West, Sep 1, 2008
Great article! I've had this happen lately, I publish an article here and have doubts that it is good enough. But then I will find out its popular and readers enjoy it. I think it's important sometimes to try and conquer that "inner critic" or censor inside that says the writing isn't good enough. Just put it out there for readers and see what happens. Sometimes writers can be too hard on themselves about their writing, IMHO.
Thanks for this great story!-Allison

I agree with Allison West. I have found that my favourite poems have not done all that well, yet poems I have spent little time on and I felt are not that good have had a much greater response.
I shall take on board your tips
